Vehicle guide
What should I check before paying a vehicle deposit?
A vehicle deposit is not automatically refundable. Before paying, verify the vehicle and seller, complete the checks that could change your decision, and record exactly what the deposit secures, whether it forms part of the purchase price, and every condition under which it will be returned or retained.

Traceability alone is not the same as buyer protection.
A deposit can create financial and contractual consequences before the wider purchase is complete. The safest approach is to finish the material checks, identify the seller and record the deposit terms before payment.
Verify the vehicle and seller
- 1
Confirm whether the seller is a trader or private individual because your rights and the evidence available differ.
- 2
Match the registration, accessible VIN, V5C and official vehicle details, but remember that a V5C or address match is not proof of ownership or authority to sell.
- 3
Verify the seller’s name, address, connection to the vehicle and payment details using information obtained independently.
- 4
Complete the material history checks, including current finance and serious provenance markers, before committing money.
Record what remains conditional
- 1
List any inspection, test drive, finance clearance, document check or promised repair that must be completed before the sale proceeds.
- 2
Record what happens if a material issue is found, the vehicle differs from its description or the seller cannot complete an agreed action.
- 3
Keep unavailable report fields recorded as unknown; do not treat missing coverage as a clear result.
- 4
Do not allow a claimed queue of buyers or short deadline to replace checks that could materially affect the purchase.
Put the deposit terms in writing
- 1
Record the vehicle registration and VIN, deposit amount, total agreed price, payment date, reservation period and expected completion date.
- 2
State whether the deposit forms part of the purchase price and the precise circumstances in which it is refundable or may be retained.
- 3
Record any condition that allows either party to withdraw and who bears inspection, delivery or other costs.
- 4
Refundability depends on the agreement, seller status, sales channel and circumstances. Do not assume that trader or remote deposits are universally refundable or that written terms remove statutory rights.
Pay and preserve evidence carefully
- 1
Use a traceable route to the independently verified payee, but remember that traceability alone is not buyer protection.
- 2
Check the payment method’s actual protections and limits with the provider; Section 75 and chargeback have different conditions and are not interchangeable guarantees.
- 3
Keep the advert, seller messages, vehicle report, written deposit terms, payment confirmation and receipt together.
- 4
Pause if the receiving account changes unexpectedly, the seller refuses written terms or the requested payment differs from what was agreed.
Your practical checklist
Tick each item as you work through the vehicle, documents and evidence. An unticked item stays open—it does not become a clear result.

Questions buyers ask
Is a vehicle deposit always refundable?
No. It depends on the agreement, the seller, how the sale was arranged and the circumstances in which either party withdraws. Record the refund and retention conditions before paying.
Should I pay a deposit before viewing the vehicle?
That increases risk because identity, condition, documents and seller details may remain unverified. If distance makes a deposit necessary, use written conditions tied to the outstanding checks and a traceable payment route.
Does paying a deposit by credit card guarantee protection?
No. Section 75 may apply to a qualifying purchase with a cash price above £100 and up to £30,000 even where only a deposit is paid by credit card, but the payment and supplier relationship must meet its conditions. Confirm the position with the card provider.
What if a report result was not returned?
Record it as unknown. If that information could change the purchase decision, make obtaining it or completing an appropriate alternative check a written condition of the deposit.

What vehicle are we looking at?
Enter the registration, or upload a clear photo of the number plate. You will confirm anything read from an image before a check runs.
Images are processed only to find registration candidates and are not retained by Car Assistant. We do not extract other V5C details.
