Can I buy a vehicle with outstanding finance?

Short answer

Do not complete the purchase while a current finance interest is reported. First establish the lender’s position and obtain written evidence that its interest will be cleared; the seller’s reassurance alone is not sufficient.

Turn a finance marker into a safe payment decision

Read the three steps
  1. 01
    01 · MarkerPause before payment

A current finance marker needs the lender's position confirmed.

  2. 02
02 · EvidenceConfirm with the lender

Use independently sourced contact details and obtain written settlement evidence.

  3. 03
03 · PaymentAgree the payment route

Proceed only when the lender's interest and settlement route are clear.

Why this matters

A current finance marker concerns a third party’s reported interest in the vehicle. The important evidence is the lender’s current position and the documented route by which that interest will end.

Evidence worth keeping
  • The agreement and lender shown in the report
  • A current settlement or clearance letter
  • Independent confirmation from the lender

Stage 1 of 3

Pause the transaction

Delay the purchase while a current finance interest is reported. A seller saying that an agreement has been paid is not the same as confirmation from the lender.

02
Stage 2 of 3

Ask for evidence

  1. 1

Ask the seller for a written settlement statement or clearance confirmation that identifies the vehicle and agreement.

  2. 2

Contact the finance company using contact details obtained independently, not only a number supplied by the seller.

  3. 3

Confirm what must happen for the lender’s interest to end and for the marker to update.

Stage 3 of 3

Before paying

Do not hand over the purchase price until the finance position and payment route are clear. If settlement is to form part of the transaction, obtain professional advice and written confirmation of the agreed process.

Tick each item as you work through the vehicle, documents and evidence. An unticked item stays open—it does not become a clear result.

Keep the decision evidence-ledDo not complete the purchase while a current finance interest is reported. First establish the lender’s position and obtain written evidence that its interest will be cleared; the seller’s reassurance alone is not sufficient.

Save the report reference, the check time and any documents or photographs you relied on. If material information remains unavailable, keep it recorded as unknown.

Common questions

Questions buyers ask

Can the seller clear the finance with my payment?

That arrangement needs a documented payment route agreed with the lender. Do not rely on the seller’s promise that they will settle it after receiving the purchase money.

Is a settlement letter enough?

It is useful evidence, but confirm it is current, identifies the correct vehicle and agreement, and can be verified through contact details obtained independently for the lender.
