Vehicle guide

How should I test-drive a used vehicle?

Short answer

Do not drive until you have confirmed that you are insured for that specific vehicle and journey. Start with the vehicle cold where possible, use a varied but safe route, operate the main controls and record anything unusual rather than letting a short accompanied drive become a sales demonstration.

Record any new noise, smell, leak or warning before deciding.

Why this matters

A test drive can reveal how the vehicle behaves once started, moving and warmed up, but it must be insured, safe and long enough to represent normal use. It does not replace diagnosis of a concerning symptom.

Evidence worth keeping
  • Confirmation of insurance cover
  • Cold-start and dashboard observations
  • Notes from a varied route and post-drive check

Stage 1 of 3

Before moving

  1. 1

Bring your valid driving licence, confirm that your insurance covers you to drive this specific vehicle, and check the vehicle has a valid MOT and appears roadworthy before moving it.

  2. 2

Ask for a cold start where practical, then check dashboard warning lights illuminate and extinguish as expected.

  3. 3

Do not continue if a red safety warning remains on, a warning’s meaning is unclear, the vehicle appears unsafe or the seller restricts the route so severely that normal operation cannot be assessed. Check the handbook or seek qualified advice before driving.

02
Stage 2 of 3

Use a representative route

  1. 1

Drive for long enough to include the roads and speeds you normally use, subject to safety, traffic and permission.

  2. 2

Check steering, brakes, clutch or automatic transmission, acceleration, visibility, seating position and driver-assistance functions.

  3. 3

Listen for knocks, vibration, wind noise or bearing noise and watch the temperature and warning displays without becoming distracted.

03
Stage 3 of 3

Check again afterwards

  1. 1

Recheck for warning lights, fluid leaks, unusual smells, cooling-fan behaviour and anything that changed as the vehicle warmed up.

  2. 2

Write down concerns and ask the seller for documentary evidence of any explanation or recent repair.

  3. 3

Arrange a qualified inspection where a symptom, repair history or safety concern needs diagnosis beyond a normal test drive.

Tick each item as you work through the vehicle, documents and evidence. An unticked item stays open—it does not become a clear result.

Save the report reference, the check time and any documents or photographs you relied on. If material information remains unavailable, keep it recorded as unknown.

Common questions

Questions buyers ask

Does comprehensive insurance let me drive any vehicle?

Not automatically. Policies and restrictions differ, so confirm cover for the specific vehicle and test drive with the insurer or other provider before driving.

How long should a used-vehicle test drive be?

It should be long enough to assess cold start, controls, low-speed manoeuvring and the kinds of road you normally use. A very short route may not reveal behaviour once the vehicle is warm.
