Can I buy a vehicle with a scrap marker?

Short answer

An active scrap marker is a high-risk finding. Check the vehicle’s identity and require documented correction of any claimed error before reconsidering it; if the active marker remains, do not proceed with the purchase.

Treat an active scrap record as a stop point

Read the three steps
  1. 01
    01 · MarkerPause before payment

An active scrap marker is a high-risk finding, not a routine history note.

  2. 02
02 · IdentityMatch vehicle and documents

Check the physical VIN, registration, V5C and MOT history together.

  3. 03
03 · OutcomeCheck the current record

Do not proceed while the active scrap marker remains.

Why this matters

An active scrap record is materially different from ordinary repair history. A claim that the record is mistaken needs documented correction; matching paperwork alone does not remove the reported marker.

Evidence worth keeping
  • Matching VIN and registration details
  • The current V5C and MOT history
  • Written confirmation of any corrected record

Stage 1 of 3

Verify the vehicle

  1. 1

Check the original V5C, registration and every accessible VIN or chassis marking.

  2. 2

Make sure those details agree with the MOT history and the vehicle you are viewing.

02
Stage 2 of 3

Ask for evidence

Ask for the circumstances behind the marker and concrete written evidence supporting any claim that it was recorded in error. A matching identity does not cancel the marker.

03
Stage 3 of 3

If an error is claimed

  1. 1

The seller should contact DVLA and the reporting vehicle-history provider.

  2. 2

Require written confirmation of the outcome and run a fresh history check after any correction.

  3. 3

If the active marker remains, do not pay a deposit or buy the vehicle.

Your practical checklist

0 of 5 checked

Tick each item as you work through the vehicle, documents and evidence. An unticked item stays open—it does not become a clear result.

Keep the decision evidence-ledAn active scrap marker is a high-risk finding. Check the vehicle’s identity and require documented correction of any claimed error before reconsidering it; if the active marker remains, do not proceed with the purchase.

Save the report reference, the check time and any documents or photographs you relied on. If material information remains unavailable, keep it recorded as unknown.

Common questions

Questions buyers ask

Can a scrap marker be removed if it is wrong?

The responsible authority or data provider may correct an evidenced administrative error. The seller should obtain written confirmation and a fresh report should show the corrected position before purchase is reconsidered.

Does a current V5C cancel a scrap marker?

No. A V5C is important identity evidence, but it does not by itself cancel a separate active scrap record.
