Why this matters

No single document proves every aspect of a vehicle’s identity, ownership and maintenance. Confidence comes from details that agree across the V5C, the physical vehicle, official records and dated invoices.

Evidence worth keeping
  • The original V5C
  • Dated MOT and service records
  • A receipt identifying the seller, buyer and vehicle

Stage 1 of 3

Core documents

  1. 1

Inspect the original V5C and confirm the registration, VIN, make, model and colour.

  2. 2

Check the MOT history directly and compare dates and mileages with service records and invoices.

  3. 3

Review service invoices rather than relying only on stamps or a digital-service-history screenshot.

Stage 2 of 3

Seller and payment

  1. 1

Remember that the V5C identifies the registered keeper; it is not proof of legal ownership.

  2. 2

Make sure the seller can explain their connection to the vehicle and that names, addresses and payment instructions are consistent.

  3. 3

Keep the advert, report, written answers, receipt and payment record.

Stage 3 of 3

Discrepancies

Ask for clear supporting evidence. Do not accept an explanation as proof that a database marker, finance interest or document mismatch has changed.

Your practical checklist

0 of 6 checked

Tick each item as you work through the vehicle, documents and evidence. An unticked item stays open—it does not become a clear result.

Keep the decision evidence-ledCross-check the V5C, VIN, MOT history, service evidence, invoices and seller details.

Save the report reference, the check time and any documents or photographs you relied on. If material information remains unavailable, keep it recorded as unknown.

Common questions

Questions buyers ask

Does the V5C prove the seller owns the vehicle?

No. It identifies the registered keeper and is important identity evidence, but it is not proof of legal ownership. Check the seller’s connection to the vehicle and payment details.

Which documents should I keep after purchase?

Keep the advert, report, written seller answers, receipt, payment record, V5C transaction evidence and copies of the service or repair documents relied on.
