Vehicle guide

Can I find a vehicle’s previous keeper?

Short answer

A vehicle-history report may show keeper counts or change dates, but it should not reveal previous keepers’ names and addresses. DVLA can release registered-keeper information only through its formal process where the requester demonstrates reasonable cause.

Why this matters

Keeper counts and change dates can help explain a vehicle’s timeline, but personal keeper details are protected and registered keeper status is not proof of ownership. Keep those questions separate.

Evidence worth keeping
  • Keeper count and dated changes
  • VIN-linked invoices or adverts
  • DVLA correspondence where a formal request is justified

Stage 1 of 3

What a vehicle report can show

  1. 1

Use keeper count, change dates and duration as timeline context rather than proof of ownership or condition.

  2. 2

Compare rapid or unexplained changes with the seller’s account and the vehicle’s invoices or previous adverts.

  3. 3

Remember that the registered keeper is not necessarily the legal owner.

02
Stage 2 of 3

What remains private

Names and addresses of previous keepers are personal data and are not an ordinary consumer vehicle-history field. Do not expect a paid check to identify those people.

03
Stage 3 of 3

When DVLA may provide information

  1. 1

Use the official DVLA request route only where you have a genuine reasonable cause.

  2. 2

Explain why the information is needed and how it will be used, and provide the evidence required by the relevant form.

  3. 3

Do not treat curiosity before a purchase as automatic entitlement to another person’s details.

Common questions

Questions buyers ask

Can a vehicle check show the names of previous owners?

A normal consumer report should not reveal previous keepers’ names or addresses. It may show counts, dates or durations without identifying people.

Can I ask DVLA for another vehicle’s keeper details?

DVLA requires a formal application and reasonable cause. The official guidance explains the accepted process and evidence; interest in a vehicle alone does not guarantee disclosure.
