Read the three steps
  1. 01
01 · ScreenStart with the registration

Compare the returned make, model and colour with the vehicle advertised.

  2. 02
02 · VehicleRead the physical VIN

Use a VIN fixed to the vehicle—not one copied from a message or advert.

  3. 03
    03 · DecisionMatch before relying

The registration, VIN, V5C and MOT record should identify the same vehicle.

Why this matters

Vehicle-history results only belong to the vehicle when the registration and VIN resolve to the same identity. A mismatch can be innocent, but it must be understood before any other result is relied on.

Evidence worth keeping
  • The VIN shown on the physical vehicle
  • The original V5C and its document details
  • Matching DVLA and MOT descriptions

Stage 1 of 3

Before viewing

  1. 1

Check the registration, make, model, colour and tax status against the official DVLA vehicle record.

  2. 2

Check the MOT history for the same registration and compare the vehicle description and recorded mileages.

02
Stage 2 of 3

At the vehicle

  1. 1

Ask to see the original V5C and check its registration and vehicle details.

  2. 2

Locate the VIN or chassis number on the physical vehicle and compare it with the V5C. Do not rely only on a VIN shown in an advert, message or photograph.

If something does not match

Pause before paying a deposit or purchase price. Ask the seller to explain the discrepancy and provide updated documentary evidence. Run a fresh check using the confirmed registration or VIN before reconsidering the vehicle.

Your practical checklist

0 of 4 checked

Tick each item as you work through the vehicle, documents and evidence. An unticked item stays open—it does not become a clear result.

Keep the decision evidence-ledMatch the registration, VIN, V5C and MOT record before relying on a vehicle’s history.

Save the report reference, the check time and any documents or photographs you relied on. If material information remains unavailable, keep it recorded as unknown.

Common questions

Questions buyers ask

Where can I find the VIN?

Common locations include the lower windscreen, a door shut and a stamped body or chassis point. Locations vary, so use the handbook if needed and compare more than one accessible marking with the V5C.

Does a matching registration prove the vehicle is genuine?

No. A registration can match a public description while the physical vehicle or documents do not. Match the registration, VIN, V5C and official records together.
