How do I check for outstanding vehicle recalls?

Short answer

Check the official recall record, then confirm with the manufacturer or an authorised repairer whether the specific VIN is affected and whether the remedy is outstanding. Follow the campaign’s instructions and any warning not to drive; do not treat a model-level listing or missing result as proof of this vehicle’s current position.

Why this matters

Recall relevance and urgency depend on the vehicle and campaign. A general recall listing should lead to a VIN-specific manufacturer check and confirmation of whether the remedy is still outstanding.

Evidence worth keeping
  • The campaign or recall reference
  • VIN-specific manufacturer confirmation
  • Written evidence that the remedy was completed

Stage 1 of 4

Start with the official check

  1. 1

Use the registration-based GOV.UK service for a car, or the make, model and year route for other supported vehicle types.

  2. 2

Record the campaign reference, description and check time.

  3. 3

If no result is returned or the vehicle type is not covered, keep the position marked as unknown and continue through the manufacturer.

02
Stage 2 of 4

Confirm the exact vehicle

  1. 1

Contact the manufacturer or an authorised repairer using the VIN.

  2. 2

Ask whether the campaign applies to this exact vehicle, whether work is outstanding and whether parts are available.

  3. 3

Do not assume that every vehicle of the same model and year is included.

03
Stage 3 of 4

Follow the campaign instructions

  1. 1

Ask how urgently the remedy is required and whether the vehicle may be driven before the work is completed.

  2. 2

If the manufacturer or official notice says not to drive because of a serious safety defect, do not drive the vehicle.

  3. 3

Arrange the approved remedy through the manufacturer network and confirm any cost before booking; recall repairs are usually provided without charge, but check the campaign terms.

04
Stage 4 of 4

Keep completion evidence

  1. 1

Obtain a dated invoice, job sheet or manufacturer confirmation identifying the VIN and completed campaign.

  2. 2

Keep it with the service history and provide it to the next keeper.

  3. 3

Recheck the status after allowing time for records to update if the campaign still appears outstanding.

Common questions

Questions buyers ask

Does a model-level recall mean this exact vehicle is affected?

Not always. Confirm applicability using the VIN through the manufacturer or an authorised retailer and ask whether the remedy is outstanding.

Can I drive a vehicle with an outstanding recall?

That depends on the campaign. Ask the manufacturer for the specific instruction. If the notice identifies a serious safety defect and says not to drive, follow that instruction.

Should I pay for recall work?

GOV.UK says owners will not usually have to pay for recall repairs or parts. Confirm the remedy and any proposed charge with the manufacturer network before authorising work.
