Is a recorded vehicle colour change a problem?

Short answer

Not necessarily. A properly recorded colour change can be legitimate and cosmetic, but buyers should still inspect the finish, look for evidence of repairs and confirm that the current colour matches the V5C and DVLA record.

Why this matters

A properly recorded colour change is not inherently adverse. The relevant buying questions are whether the current colour is correctly recorded, why the work was done and whether its finish or associated repairs are satisfactory.

Evidence worth keeping
  • The current V5C and DVLA colour
  • Bodyshop invoices or photographs
  • A daylight inspection of finish and panel alignment

Stage 1 of 3

Confirm the record

  1. 1

Check that the current colour agrees with the V5C and DVLA vehicle record.

  2. 2

Ask when and why the colour changed and whether it was a full repaint or removable wrap.

02
Stage 2 of 3

Inspect the finish

  1. 1

Look in daylight for overspray on seals, trims and badges and inside door shuts and under the bonnet.

  2. 2

Check panel gaps and compare colour and finish across adjacent panels.

  3. 3

Ask for invoices, photographs or a professional bodyshop description of the work.

Stage 3 of 3

Keep it in proportion

A recorded change may be cosmetic and legitimate. Treat unexplained repair signs or poor workmanship as separate condition questions rather than labelling the colour history itself as adverse.

Save the report reference, the check time and any documents or photographs you relied on. If material information remains unavailable, keep it recorded as unknown.

Common questions

Questions buyers ask

Is changing a vehicle’s colour allowed?

A colour change is not inherently adverse when it is properly recorded. Buyers should check that the present colour agrees with the V5C and DVLA record.

Why inspect a recorded colour change?

The change may be cosmetic, but an inspection can reveal poor finish, overspray or repair work that needs its own explanation and assessment.
